The chickenpox virus stays in our systems forever awaiting the opportunity to emerge later in life in the form of shingles, an incredibly painful rash that presents on one side of your body. Shingles happens in the elderly, or those with a compromised immune system, or the run-down and stressed out.
Two weeks ago I got shingles. I’m not elderly and I don’t have a compromised immune system. I fall clearly in the category of the run-down and stressed out. The funny thing is that I don’t feel anymore stressed or run-down than normal, but my physician and the shingles insist otherwise. It is amazing how something that lives inside us can sit lying in wait and the moment the suppression is removed we can succumb. It is likewise alarming how we can be unaware that we are on the border of compromise until it is decidedly too late. Only healthy rhythms and consistent rest and retreat can prevent being overrun by the suddenness of what lies within.
